How to Apply Fake Blood

The right makeup can elevate any Halloween costume ensemble. Blood makeup can enhance fake wounds, scars, stitches, or bruises. Whether you’re dressing up as a zombie, a nurse, or a vampire, Spirit Halloween has the perfect selection of fake blood to complete your outfit.

Below is a step-by-step tutorial on how to apply fake blood makeup:

Choosing Your Fake Blood

What’s your (blood) type?

Bloody Scab:

Perfect for a crusted, dried-blood look.

Bloody Scab makeup can be used to create torn skin and realistic wounds. Whether you’re using latex wounds or creating your own wound effects with makeup, this blood type is the perfect finishing touch. Great for scabs and face cuts, this blood makeup cakes up quickly, creating a crusted, dried-blood look.

How to apply:

Apply the desired amount of blood to the skin with your fingers or a cotton swab. To remove, wash with mild soap and warm water.

Gel Blood:

Perfect for a gooey, thick-blood look.

For a fresh and thicker blood consistency, use Gel Blood makeup. This blood is excellent for neck wounds, or anywhere you’d like to create deeper-looking damage. With little to no drip, you’ll have total control over how this blood looks.

How to apply:

Apply the desired amount of blood to the skin with your fingers or a cotton swab. To remove, wash with mild soap and warm water.

Theatrical Blood:

Perfect for a drippy, runny-blood look.

Theatrical blood is runny and messy. If you’re looking for a more natural, imperfect look, this is the blood makeup for you. This blood’s over-the-top drip is excellent for fake cuts and bruises, providing a hyper-realistic look!

How to apply:

Apply the desired amount of blood to the skin with your fingers or a cotton swab. To remove, wash with mild soap and warm water.

Spray Blood:

Perfect for a splattered blood look.

Spray blood creates a seamless and natural looking splatter effect. This easy-to-use blood adds extra horror to any look. One spritz, and you’ll be a blood-splattered monster mess!

How to apply:

Spray blood directly onto costume, face, body, and more. To remove, wash with mild soap and warm water.

Blood Capsules:

Perfect for a mouth-safe blood look.

It’s love at first bite. These mouth-safe blood capsules look and flow like real blood. Just bite and let the fake blood erupt! These blood capsules are must-haves for any realistic Vampire costume.

How to apply:

Cut off the top of the capsule. Place the tablet in your mouth, between the cheek and back teeth. When ready, bite down! Blood will ooze out. After the tablet has been emptied, discard it. Do not swallow the capsule. To remove, wash with mild soap and warm water.

How to Create the Perfect Fake Wound

Our favorite way to create realistic-looking cuts, bruises, and injuries is by applying special effects makeup. Take your Halloween costume to the next level with prosthetic wounds, shredded scars, and zombie flesh kits! Here’s how to achieve the look:

What You Might Need:

Liquid Latex: This material is commonly used for creating realistic wounds and scars.

Makeup: Cream-based makeup in colors like red, brown, black, and purple for bruising and blood.

Fake Blood: To add a realistic touch to your wounds.

Makeup Brushes and Sponges: These will help you apply and blend the makeup.

Setting Powder: To set the makeup and prevent smudging.

Old Clothes or Apron: Liquid latex, fake blood, and cream makeup can be messy, so wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Picking Your Fake Wound

The first step in picking a fake wound prosthetic is considering your costume. Dressing up as a zombie? Opt for some flesh wounds or bite marks. Hittin’ the town as Count Dracula? Don’t forget your fangs and some neck bite wounds. Never be afraid to get creative!

How to Apply Fake Wounds

Prep your skin by washing; you’ll want to start with a clean base. If necessary, trim the appliance to fit the desired area. Hold it up to your skin to see where to place it before applying any liquid latex. When ready, apply a thin, even layer of liquid latex to the back of the prosthetic wound piece. Be sure to cover the entire area where the wound will adhere to your skin. Carefully place the prosthetic onto your skin in the desired position. Press gently to ensure good adhesion.

Use a makeup sponge or brush to blend the edges of the prosthetic into your skin. This helps create a seamless transition between the prosthetic and your skin. Next, you can color the wound and surrounding area with cream-based makeup. Start with reds and purples for the inner part of the wound to mimic bruising. Add darker colors like black and brown around the edges to create depth. Blend the colors well.

Apply fake blood to the wound and the surrounding area for a realistic effect. You can let it drip and pool for a more dramatic look. Finally, dust a small amount of setting powder over the wound and surrounding makeup to set it and prevent smudging.

Remember, practice makes perfect. If you’re new to applying prosthetic wounds, give yourself some time to experiment before Halloween!
