Once all the Christmas and New Year’s Eve fun comes to an end, winter can get kind of boring. But one of the best holidays to celebrate during the coldest stretch of the year is National Popcorn Day. There’s nothing better than bundling up with a blanket, firing up a movie, and eating a big ol’ bowl of popcorn. This year, we put together a list of our favorite winter horror movies. These movies are truly bone-chilling and embrace the scary side of winter!

The Thing (1982) Directed by John Carpenter

(Rated R) – Available on Hulu, Vudu, and Prime Video

Directed by one of horror’s greatest filmmakers, The Thing shocked audiences when it was released in 1982 and it’s still considered an incredible classic. The story takes place in Antarctica, where researchers find an extraterrestrial parasite that causes mayhem at the base. Get ready to shiver. Not only does this movie take place in a chilly setting, but the story will have you shaking with fear.

30 Days of Night (2007) Directed by David Slade

(Rated R) – Available on Pluto TV, Vudu, and Prime Video

30 Days of Night takes place in a small town in Alaska. The town is so far north that in the winter, it doesn’t see sunlight for 30 days. Since it’s dark all the time, it’s become a pretty convenient spot for vampires to feast. Grab a blanket for this one. The setting will definitely give you the chills. Also, you can use it to hide your eyes from the screen…

Frozen (2010) Directed by Adam Green

(Rated R) – Available on Hulu, Pluto TV, Tubi TV, YouTube Movies, and Prime Video

*DISCLAIMER* This is NOT the kids’ movie. This is a nightmare-inducing horror movie that will make you scream! Frozen tells the story of three friends that go on a skiing trip. Sounds fun, right? That is until they get stranded on the ski lift and the park closes for the weekend. Plus, a winter storm is approaching. HOW FUN.

Let the Right One In (2008) Directed by Tomas Alfredson

(Rated R) – Available on Hulu, Vudu, and Prime Video

Another snowy setting and another terrifying vampire story. It’s no surprise, as the look of the blood on the white snow has a dramatic and startling visual effect. Let the Right One In is thrilling, chilling, and will definitely make you squirm.

Misery (1990) Directed by Rob Reiner

(Rated R) – Available on SHOWTIME, Vudu, and Prime Video

Adapted from the Stephen King book, Misery is a horrifying story about a famous author who crashes his car and is rescued by a fan. But the author soon realizes that the fan is dangerous and wants to hold him captive!
