Using the Reel FX Gargoyle, Horror Makeup Kit

Supplies:

  • Reel FX Gargoyle, Horror Makeup Kit
  • Hand sanitizer, toner or face cleanser
  • No-color or translucent face powder
  • Liquid latex
  • Powder brush
  • Thin paint brushes
  • Cotton
  • Baby oil
  • Hair dryer
  • Facial tissue paper
  • Cloak
  • Wig

Step 1:

Clean hands and make sure skin area is clean using toner.

Step 2:

Align and cut your latex mask from your kit to fit your model's face, making sure the eye area is clear.  The kit is recommended for a full size adult but if the appliance is still too big, fill in all hollow areas, such as horns, brows and cheekbones, with cotton.

Step 3:

Pre-color your mask using colors from your kit.  Use brushes and sponges to apply the color and use baby oil to help blend and move the makeup color.  To recess any part of the mask, use dark colors.

Step 4:

Pre-blackout the eyes and mouth of your model.

Step 5:

Lightly coat the bridge of the nose of both your mask and your model with spirit gum. (Spirit gum is a contact adhesive.  For best usage, let it get tacky on both sides before placing parts together.  Apply pressure for 30 seconds.)

Step 6:

Work from the inner to the outer edges of your mask, one section at a time with the spirit gum.  Move up to the forehead, then under and around the eyes.  (Never use adhesive too close to the eyes.)  Then move to the sides.

Step 7:

Take your facial tissue and rip it into a single layer.  Sponge and dip it into liquid latex and carefully blot (stipple) over a thin layer to blend and seal the outer edges of your mask.  As the latex dries, rip your anchored facial tissue to create jagged edges.  Not only will this blend your edges, but it will also create a cool cracked skin effect.  Make sure to bring it down the neck as well.  Let it dry and then powder it.  (Use a hair dryer to speed up drying time.)

Step 8:

Make any  additional details with the makeup from your Reel FX Gargoyle, Horror Makeup Kit.  Pay special attention to the edges around the eyes and any exposed skin that needs blending.  Use black on the edges and in the creases around the eye.  Use a combination of black and white to create various grays to be applied to high points (the horns, for instance).  To create a cracked look, use your thin paint brush to paint black on the tissue like you would paint branches on a tree.

Step 9:

Add a cloak and wig, and you are good to go!

Removal:

Gently use any oily makeup remover and slowly peel back and use a q-tip to put the makeup remover under the mask.  Wash with soap and warm water.
