Halloween Costumes  /  Halloween Crafts /  Cereal Box Tombstones

Put any empty cereal boxes around to Halloween use. Here’s what you need:

  • Black & white tempera paint (for a spookier Halloween get red too!)
  • 3 cups for mixing paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Cereal boxes, any shape or size
  • 2 sponges
  • Thick black permanent marker

Mix the black & white paints in different proportions to make a light, medium, & dark gray. Paint each box with 2 or 3 coats of medium gray & let dry. Using the sponges, dab on the light & dark gray paint for a mottled look. If you'd like a scarier Halloween, try splash some red paint on the tompstones or coat your hand in paint and leave "bloody" handprints. After the paint has dried, write names, dates, & include witty sayings on the gravestone using the black permanent maker. For example: “Here lies Jimmy Dean. He'll be a ghost every Halloween! 1795-1857”
