Boo-tiful Halloween Masks

This messy craft requires two people, so grab a friend. First, gather up all the supplies you are going to need:

  • Plaster of Paris: you can get it at drug stores or make your own by cutting newspaper into strips about 1” to 3” wide & about ½ foot in length. Use a mixture of flour & water as molding
  • Vaseline
  • Bowl of water
  • Scissors
  • Acrylic paints
  • Paint brushes
  • Glue
Now that we’re ready – make sure you are each wearing old clothing because this activity has a high rating of messiness. Wash your face & then cover it with Vaseline. One at a time, dip Plaster of Paris strips into the bowl of water & gently place on your friend’s face. Cover the entire face with two or three layers, leaving the eyes & mouth uncovered. You can increase the number of layers in areas you want to emphasize on your mask, for example the cheeks or nose. Once you’re done applying the layers to your friend’s face,  wet your  fingers and smooth out the whole mask. After about 40 minutes, the mask should be dry enough to remove. Scrunch your face all around & you will begin to feel the mask lifting off of your skin. Allow the mask to dry completely, this can take anywhere from 4 to 12 hours depending on the number of layers applied. Then use acrylic paints to decorate your mask or glue on any decorations you desire
